Whilst there they discuss the merits, or lack thereof, of carrying more than 3,000gp around on their persons, and eventually decided to leave 1,000gp with Qutai, to see if he could be trusted as a banker before leaving the rest. The following day they split off into various tasks, seeking to destabilise the rival gang even further: Ryo and Chae write a letter to Gam Yang, a member of the Imperial Guard that Qutai has discovered is on the payroll of the Goto Mei. Ryo takes it to courier and tells them it's urgent, then follows the woman as she sprints to deliver it. She drops the letter off with a guard outpost, and a military courier leaves there by boat with it. Ryo sprints through the city after the boat, managing to keep up, and sees it delivered to another guard outpost in the western edges bordering the Temple District. He watches the outside of the building for a little while, seeing three guards working inside, then returns to report in. Sassani and Chae head to Downriver to check in on the orphans they had recruited to deface the Goto Mei symbols around the city. The bullish ringleader from the previous day is notably missing, but a larger group of children have turned up and seem keen to keep working. When questioned, they claim to have no knowledge of the ringleader's whereabouts. The crowd contains the group of orphans that had initially refused to help Suna, and also Jago and Kokai, but they run away when they see Chae. Sassani instructs them to continue to work in Downriver, but not to spread out into the rest of the city. Kathra visits the temple of Kazan no Saisei, in the Temple District. She finds a smaller number of protesters still outside, and is told by the priests at work that they believe the number has dropped because it's been a few days since the last murders. Kathra takes food and water out to the crowd, not speaking or engaging, but providing aid where needed, and is successful in tamping the worst of the emotion in the group. She instructs the priests to continue to providing for the protesters for as long as they turn up. Wei visited the Chisan Library inside Hebi Palace to see if he could find any maps of The Fangs, in case they needed to infiltrate the compounds to locate Gam Yang. Unfortunately he was unsuccessful, finding that the maps of the city included no detail about the military locations. He was the first to return to the hideout, and on doing so discovered a note left in the centre of the camp giving an address in the city and one word: Midnight. Wrapped up in the note he also found the other half of the Lover's Caress earrings, over which he'd heard a woman asking "Who is this?" the previous night. When everyone else returned he showed them his findings, and Ryo also noticed "Friends" carved into the log in Thieves' Cant. Whilst Qutai and Dashya hadn't noticed anyone coming into the camp, the intruder hadn't been paying attention to Minami, who was able to project images of the drop-off into Chae's mind. She saw a tall, dark-skinned woman in a long cape, with her hood pulled low over her head, walk into the camp and drop the items off before loping back out again. The party decide to go to the rendezvous, and find that they've been directed to a zoological museum a little distance outside Hebi Palace. They successfully sneak into the back of the building and discover it empty, so call out to see if anyone is present. The same woman from Minami's projection steps from the shadows, and drops her hood. She introduces herself as Ghojill, The Wraith, one of the four Goto Mei lieutenants that the party were trying to set on each other. Ghojill explains that "Nice" Joho and Ldemi had joined forces and claimed The Pit for themselves. She had been working on a plan to overthrow them with the fourth lieutenant, Rakya, but the party had inadvertently burned down their hideout the previous night, leaving Rakya dead in the battle, and Ghojill was unable to face them alone. She presented the group with the idea that she would help them retake The Pit if they'd help her kill Joho and Ldemi, after which she would take whichever members of the Goto Mei she could out to regroup, and leave The Pit and any who remained to The Butterflies. The party agrees to work with Ghojill, though they are suspicious of her motives and trustworthiness. They return to their hideout for the night, and introduce the plan to Qutai. He is skeptical, but agrees to listen to Ghojill. After a fair amount of argument and bargaining, the group reaches an agreement to sneak into The Pit to chop the head off the snake rather than the frontal assault Ghojill has initially suggested. Ghojill also relents to making the remaining Goto Mei in the city subordinate to The Butterflies, but insists that they retain their operational independence. The attack is set for the coming evening. The group stealthily approach The Pit from the rear, but discover that any guards on their route have been dispatched before their arrival. When they arrive on the wide waterway that surrounds The Pit they fire the flare Ghojill had given them into the water, and see the promised rope ladder drop down from the balcony outside Sarizhan's old office. They traverse the river and climb to the balcony, where they can see a man sat facing away from them at the main desk with a number of guards present. They spring the attack, with Wei Liang instantly incapacitating the seating man. As their attention is absorbed in the battle, Ghojill leaps back over the balcony and slides down into the river. The Goto Mei guards fight back, until a man with long, black hair, dark eyes, and fanciful black cloak emerges from a side room. The man, Joho, starts throwing walls of fire into the room to stop the party's advance, but being the brave scoundrels they are the party leap through wall after wall of fire, badly burning themselves in doing so, to cut him and the remaining bandits down. The group loads the man at the desk onto Sassani's Broom of Flying and makes their escape before reinforcements can arrive.
